a year without a real job (and 10 other things ive stopped doing).

its the middle of april now, and if youve been following around here for a while, you know that the middle of april is also the one year anniversary of me quitting my job(s) at joanns. quitting joanns was definitesly a hard decision, but ultimately, it was absolutely neccesary. we did need the money, but we also needed me to be home more, less stressed out and to be able to pursue the schooling and self employment opportunities that would actually help us acheive the kind of life that we want. and looking back over the past year, cutting out that one really big source of stress/tension/anxiety/problems really served as a catalyst for a whole bunch of other, albiet smaller, changes that, all together, have added up to HUGE changes around here. i mean, im still the same super annoying-uptight-no-fun-at-all victoria i always was, but i promise, i used to be way worse.

so aside from quitting my job, what else have i stopped doing this year?

1. drinking soda.

2. playing phone/ipad games.

3. buying things just to buy things.

4. clipping coupons.

5. going to two grocery stores.

6. treating our apartment as temporary.

7. letting my diet ruin my life.

8. chasing freebies.

9. keeping things for stupid reasons.

10. being "friends" with people that make me feel bad.

i wont bother going into detail about what went into/resulted from each, since really they all kind of overlap, but together all these small changes added up to make huge changes in how i live my life: im way less stressed out, i have way more free time, i have more spending money, im less anxious and for the first time in my life, im actually able to focus on making long-term goals and changes.

case in point: right now were elbow-deep in some major home projects. the kind of thing that a year ago, i wasnt even able to mentally process because of how busy and cluttered my life was.

did quitting my terrible job instantly fix everything? no. did i instantly jump into 100% dream-following mode? no. do i even know exactly where were headed from here? no. but was it absolutely life changing? yes. not in the big, dramatic ways that one usually associates with quitting their day job, but in lots and lots of small ways that have added up to givign me the space and freedom to dedicate time and energy to making life better for all of us, in a way that i really wasnt able to before. yeah, i dont have a real job. yeah i dont really have a satisfactory answer for any of the people who ask me what it is i do. but thanks to taking the leap and quitting joanns, I'm a better wife, a better mom, and all around a better person with a better life then we ever had when i was working.

so happy unemployent-aversary to me.

a frustrating season and a reminder that we need this.

outfit details:

top: jc penney (very old)
shorts: vintage
shoes: elorie (purchased from gilt)
glasses: zenni optical

if i were to describe how life is going right now, id say were in a frustrating season. and i dont just mean that because im still wearing shorts and its freaking NOVEMBER, its just that (as ive mentioned before) its that were in this prolonged season of transition. there are just so many things changing and they just wont quit moving around. have i mentioned lately how much i hate change? even though i do realize that all of these changes are moving our family forward into the kind of life that we want to have, its still frustrating.

so, so frustrating. here are a few of the things im struggling with:

school. this semester im in three classes. i know that doesnt sound like a lot but theyre all COMPLETELY different and have completely separate supplies and commitments. all three classes are only one day a week, so theyre LONG. im gone a lot. way more than id like to be, and when i am home, i have homework to do, or maybe i just want to sleep. its thrown a huge wrench in our weekly routines and takes so much out of me that i often feel like i cant give my best to james and alice (my priority), and honestly, i just dont have any energy left for any other family and friends. i feel like im failing everybody right now. also, i finally sat down with a fall and spring schedule to figure out what order i need to take the rest of my classes in, and the way things are set up at my school (assuming nothing gets cancelled or messed up), i wont graduate until the spring of 2017.

work. not working at joanns anymore has been a HUGE relief, and so far, jamberry has been even more of a blessing than i could have imagined. but im starting a whole new job from scratch. everything is a learning experience, and since my time and energy are severely limited, its nearly impossible for me to stay on top of running parties, booking more parties, promoting on social media, pursuing consultant leafs, managing my team (were 12 strong now!), ordering supplies, and all the other things that being a consultant entails (no, that was NOT an exhaustive list of things i do). because of this, my workload tends to flip-flop from tons of work to none and back the other way every couple of weeks. and the fact that I'm just not naturally great at being my own boss? not helping.

my health. honestly, my health hasnt been particularly bad lately, its just that its never all that good. i acknowledge and take full responsibility for taking on WAY more than my frail body can realistically handle, but at the same time, i kind of need it to cooperate.

jamess job. since this spring, james has been working a ton. i mean, his schedule is only just now slowing down for winter. but hes still gone a lot, and i dont usually have the help that i need/am used to having. also, a variety of (not having anything to do with us) circumstances have put him about six months behind where he should be in his apprenticeship program. meaning, we have at least another two years before he journeys out and we dont have to deal with school week anymore. were probably going to graduate around the same time at this rate.

but through all of this, as frustrating and seemingly endless as it feels, we need this. all of it. i need to do well in school, not only because ivee dreamt of having my own independent label since i was a little girl, but also because when i graduate, ill be able to freelance as a designer or pattern maker. and i need that long-term flexibility if were going to homeschool (which we are). i need to be optimistic and persistent with jamberry because it IS suiting our needs for a second income right now, and not having to work outside of the home is whats made going back to school even possible. i need to be patient and have a good attitude about my health because well, we all know by now that thats not changing anytime soon. and all of us need to be patient with jamess job and learn to go with the flow, because, yes, eventually he will journey out, he will make that journeyman money, and those quarterly school letters will stop coming.

but most of all, i have to remind myself to be thankful (ha, i didnt realize when i was planning this post that it would be so seasonally appropriate). i need to be thankful that i AM in school studying my passion and im able to work from home while i do it. i need to be thankful that even though my health sucks most of the time, at least i know how to deal with it. i need to be thankful that james not only has a job, but a job with excellent benefits and a career track that will be pretty great in a few years.

i have to be thankful that as difficult and exhausting and frustrating as things are right now, they are nowhere near as crappy as they used to be. weve spent the last two years or so deciding what kind of life we wanted for our family, and planting the sets we needed to make that happen. and now those seeds have all been planted and were waist-deep in the hard work part. a lot of the time it sucks, but we need this. we have goals, we have dreams, and they arent going to happen without all the work that were doing now.

so instead of begrudgingly tolerating long hours, stupid homework, and shorts in november, i will be thankful. because we need this. all of it. except maybe the shorts in november part but i suppose thats just what we get for living in los angeles.

CREATE 2014 + getting back in the craft fair game.

as youve probably heard about a million, billion times on instagram and twitter, we (i almost typed i, but really poverty luxe is a family affair and james and alice deserve credit here too) did our first craft fair with poverty luxe last weekend!

now, this wasnt my first craft fair ever, id actually done quite a few when i was in college with my old etsy shop. but, none of those really went all that great, and after taking SUCH a long break (during which, i obviously analyzed and overanalyzed everything i did wrong and how to address it) , i was really happy to finally have a chance to put all these really important things i know now (like, um, branding, customer service, and displays that are actually functional). and i mean, $50 craft fair, RIGHT DOWN THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE? sold.

even though i had booked the fair a couple MONTHS ago, i (obviously) totally procrastinated and didnt really do any preparations until the last couple of weeks before the fair, but thankfully, everything got done. i made somewhere around 100 new bows (several new fabrics will be coming to the shop soon!), and james helped me make a super cute display for them:

(p.s. that awesome white cubby thing? i found that IN THE TRASH just a couple days before the fair, how perfect is that?)

even though it took a couple of very frustrating trips to the hardware store, we did get my rack built, and its awesome and i love it:

also, i painted signs, which dont look like much but im really proud of them because i do. not. paint. and they came out pretty cute.

but seriously, how stinking cute are all my skirts all lined up on my new rack? i mean really:

and of course i had a couple clearance bins of pieces from my old shop that I'm just not sure what to do with (but seriously, what am i supposed to do with this stuff?):

and after weeks of stress and panic and frustration and tears and feeling like a failure because i couldnt get the freezer paper printing on fabric thing to work (spoiler alert: james did, everything has labels now), we had achieved something i had never been able to do before with  my old shop:

and attractive, functional booth/display, filled with a carefully curated collection of well-constructed pieces that all go together and reflect a consistent brand image. that alone was an amazing feeling.

but after all that blathering about the booth and the process and all that, im assuming what you actually want to know is how the fair itself actually went.

and well, im not sure how to answer that question. obviously, the most important part is that i did it and poverty luxe is henceforth able and prepared to do more craft fairs in the future, and the second most important part is that i didnt lose money on the fair (mainly thanks to my completely insane business model).

but the event itself? meh. dont get me wrong, the girls running the fair worked very hard, they picked a great location, a great mix of vendors, and did a great job about promoting the event as a whole as well as spotlighting the individual vendors on instagram. however, i didnt realize that the girls running the show were like, 18, and maybe not super experienced with running a full-blown craft fair (and maybe this is just me being snobby from having been involved in several real, serious craft fairs in the past), but the day-of operations? those were kind of a mess. and attendance? well, lets just say that if each individual vendor had simply brought 10 friends/family members (like i did), and nothing else, the attendance would have been awesome. and sales? my sales covered my booth fee (plus a little left over to sponsor a blog giveaway coming up), BUT all of that, except for one $5 purchase, was from people i know.

but instead of focusing on those things, id rather give us all pats on the back for just doing the fair, and appreciate the cute new prints and tardis skirt that i got from other vendors.

and you know, i actually wrote a blog post, so thats cool.

poverty luxe: coming soon to a craft fair near you! (assuming that youre near gardena, that is...)

so, i was hoping that id be able to jump right back into blogging at full speed with the "what is poverty luxe" series that ive been working on, but as you may or may not know (depending on how many social media outlets you follow me on), james has been working out of town for the past five weeks.

five. weeks.

and most of those weeks have included working on saturday, meaning, that for over a month now, i only have a husband at home on sundays. over half of which is spent at church and our new weekly trip to the revolving sushi restaurant and 99 cent store (which are conveniently right next to each other, thus proving that a low income, mostly asian neighborhood is the BEST PLACE EVER). so as you can probably imagine, writing a serious  series defining and explaining the somewhat abstract ethos of our lifestyle, well... thats not coming along as quickly as i had hoped.

BUT! i do have some good news for you: (and also perhaps a handful of shorter, lighter posts both before and in between this new series):

poverty luxe (the brand) is officially booked for its first ever real life craft fair this summer!!!!!

the event is called CREATE 2014, and its happening on august 2nd, right here in gardena, you can read more about the event on their website, and i am so, SO excited to be a part of it (i seriously could NOT even make up a better jump back into the craft fair world!).

and since june has absolutely FLOWN by (mostly because of my exhausted and sleep-deprived state), i now have a little more than a month to prepare. which ordinarily would send me straight into panic mode, except that im already happy with the size of my inventory, so sewing more isnt necessarily a priority.

i do have to make fabric labels and sew them into all my skirts though (does anyone know where i can get freezer paper around here?), make some signs, and build a clothing rack  (does anyone want to come over with some drills?.

but i can do all that in a month, right?

i really hope so, i mean, this booth is already paid for....

why i LOVE working for jamberry.

today is jamess birthday. happy birthday james. hope you enjoy all of the special surprises that i have planned today (and that you havent figured them all out yet....)!

so obviously were going to be out of the house all day. so instead of whatever it was i had originally put on the blog calendar for today. im just going to take a minute to rave about how much i LOVE working for jamberry.

i mean really.

after a less-than-satisfying run as an avon rep when i was in college, i was pretty sure that direct sales wasnt for me.

but jamberry is different. jamberry is a single, straightforward product (that happens to be AWESOME) at one price point, that basically sells itself once people try it. oh, and once you sign up, there is tons and tons and TONS of help and support and encouragement, not only from jamberry directly, but also from the other consultants. seriously, theres no territorial competition to out sell all the other consultants, instead, theres a genuine, helpful support from all the other ladies that are doing the same thing. its amazing.

now, i started my first jamberry party about a month ago, and ive ALREADY:

1. made about the same amount of money id have made from my teaching position at joanns (from home, in my spare time, no less). im not consistently making a full blown part time income, but, ive only just started.

2. earned $177 in free product from my launch party AND a $75 product credit for completing my first fast start goal, so basically i never have to pay for jamberries ever again.

3. added my first team member (the lovely jessica from the reinvention of jessica).

4. completed two parties AND booked three more (with a couple maybes for the future).

5. was able to quit my dead-end job and pursue something with the potential to make more money in the future (and you know, not be super stressed out about spending all my free time making no money at a job i hate, thats a plus).

6. completely paid back my WHOLE initial investment with my first party alone (consultant kit, business cards, and the ENTIRE book of stamps i used to mail out samples), so its ALL profit from here.

and 7. gotten a promotion! in all the jobs ive had, I've NEVER gotten a promotion, so this one was particularly exciting.

but im not sharing all of this to brag.  im sharing all of this because spent YEARS trying to figure out a way to legitimately work from home so that i could stay home with alice and not be stressed out and gone every saturday and be able to take things slow when my fibro is flaring up. its only been a month and jamberry has ALREADY been a HUGE help in this department.

im sharing this because i want to help. jamberry has been a dream come true for us in so many ways, and i can not just sit on it by myself when i know there are lots and lots of ladies out there in blog land that really could use an opportunity like this.

so if you, like me, have been looking for a completely legitimate way to work from home, thats totally fun and doesnt take a large up-front investment (i know, it sounds too good to be true, but i SWEAR its not, id never lie to you about this, actually, i was really hesitant to even write about my experience with jamberry until i was SURE that it was worth it), jamberry might be worth your consideration. i mean, theres really not a whole lot to lose.

and id love to help you get started.

because who wouldnt want to get paid for talking about nails on facebook? i mean, dont we all do that for free anyway?

april call for sponsors!

happy april everyone! i actually dont have any silly april fools pranks for you today, mainly because im a cranky old lady that hates april fools day, so today were just going to get straight down to business.

sponsor business.

because, you know, as usual, its the first of the month and that means its time for me to completely re-design my sponsor program, right?

WRONG! actually, as far as my options are concerned, everythings staying just about the same. with the exception that ive moved the large sponsor group feature to the end of the month instead of the middle because well, that just makes more sense.

so for a quick review, your options are:

in-post ad: $10, includes banner space PLUS a solo sponsor spotlight feature PLUS the option of your own original guest post and social media love. unfortunately, its currently booked through mid-may, however, you could always just reserve your spot in advance. winky face.

large ad: $3, includes large sidebar ad PLUS a spot in the monthly meet the sponsors post which is super fun and an awesome way to make new blog friends and social media love. as of right now, i have EIGHT spots open for the april feature happening on the 24th. you DEFINITELY want in on this.

small ad: $1 (or free if you want to swap!), includes smaller sidebar ad PLUS an introductory tweet, IF AND ONLY IF you put your twitter handle in the "about this ad" field, this is basically the cheapest ad you can get anywhere in blogland (since, you know, its free to swap), and i have three spots open RIGHT NOW.

oh! and as an added bonus, ive been working my butt off to grow this here blog of mine, and my numbers are continuing to grow every month, meaning, your ad and/or feature is getting seen by more people than ever before, and i havent raised my prices.

and im sure once you see the numbers on my sponsorship page, youll see that sponsoring poverty luxe is a very, very good idea.

i mean. not that im biased or anything...

sometimes i forget that im sick (a nice morning at disneyland + weekly wishes)

last week we had a pretty full week. james was home most of the week (but since hes worked full time basically the whole month, i wasnt worried about it), and tuesday, he was so kind as to take alice to the beach so i could work. this was especially awesome because, drumroll please.... i was able to FINISH a little batch of scarves for the shop. this one with the bow print is my favorite:

then, the rest of the week was fairly uneventful, i dont think we did anything notable except driving across town to the running shoe store because i found a fantastic deal on the nike frees that i had decided on getting (there was another shoe that was even lighter and more supportive, but really, i couldnt handle feeling like my feet were in an iron maiden).

obviously why thursday night we were getting bored, and alice has been asking for the jungle cruise just about every day. so friday we decided to spend the morning at disneyland. normally id pack a lunch for us, but james was extremely antsy to get there quickly since big thunder mountain railroad just re-opened (its been closed for like, two years. this was a big deal), so we decided that it was our special family date for the week and wed also go out for lunch (ultimately, this was a fantastic call on jamess part because i had an incredible gluten free pizza that im still fantasizing about).

we were at the park for maybe four, four and a half hours, and it was great. alice got her jungle cruise:

hung out with the goats:

got to meet robin hood (seriously, in my whole life ive NEVER seen robin hood):

we had forgotten to bring alices autograph book. obviously since robin hood was there (a favorite of both james AND alice) we had to get a new one.

then after lunch alice had a special request. she wanted to ride the "space rockets" (astro orbiters or whatever, its basically dumbo but in tomorrow land). since shes asked to go on this ride probably the last three times weve been at disneyland right as were about to leave so weve always said no. we made sure she got to try the space rockets:

and i dont think ive ever seen her so excited about anything in her whole life. as soon as we got in the little rocket (which was WAY smaller than i remember it being), alice yelled "are you ready guys! lets blast off!" before we could even get the seatbelt on her. i just about died.

then after that, james and i used our big thunder mountain fast passes (which we miraculously got right after they re-opened the fast pass distribution after closing it for some technical difficulties so we only had to wait about an hour), and then we went home for alices nap time.

at which point i did all of the days chores that id neglected by playing hooky at disneyland, then cooked an elaborate dinner, and then went to bed thinking i could just pop right out of bed and make it to my friends bridal shower at 10:30. you know, like a normal person.

well, turns out i was wrong. so, so, so wrong. i did wake up on time, but i was still so groggy and in so much pain that getting dressed and putting on makeup and shoes felt like wrestling a bear. by time i had done those three small things (that I'm sure most people do every day without even thinking about it), i was so tired, so sore, and so emotional, that i just couldnt do anything else. i spent most of the day in bed, crying. wearing my fancy bridal shower dress. because all we did was spend four hours at disneyland and i SHOULD be able to do something as simple as go to a party.

but i couldnt. and really, i should have expected that. because, im not a normal person. im sick. and sometimes (well, a lot of the time, lately) i forget about that. while having fibromyalgia doesnt really stop me from doing anything, it most certainly keeps me from being able to do everything. and lately, ive been too hard to be wonder woman. to say yes to everyone and to do all the things and go all the places and do all the work and have all the fun.

i feel like this would be draining enough for a healthy person, but for me, each seemingly small activity brings its own little baggage of pain and fatigue, and unless i take lots and lots of breaks (more than even i think i need), to deal with each thing one at a time, it all rolls together and compounds until i spend an entire day sobbing in the fetal position because i tried to do two big busy weekends in a row (remember, last weekend, we went to the zoo). and i really have to stop doing this.

over the past eight (ish) years, ive learned to get used to living with fibromyalgia. to be happy with a slower, quieter, less busy life than what most people are used to. and most of the time, its not bad at all. yes i get tired easily, yes it takes me a very long time to recover from something as simple as a bike ride, and yes i am usually in a medium to severe amount of pain that no medicine really fixes. but as long as i take things slow, as long as i get plenty of rest, i can do whats important. i just, cant expect stressing over getting to a morning bridal shower immediately after letting myself get way too busy too many weekends in a row to result in anything other than panic attacks.

i guess thats my life lesson for the week.

on a much less somber note, my first fashion class starts tonight!

AND, as i mentioned earlier, i bought running shoes and attempted to get my student id (turns out the day i went was during spring break so no one was there, next week ill try again) so last weeks weekly wishes went well.

whats up for this week? mainly i just want to get a good start on my classes and get my textbooks taken care of.

what are your goals for this week?

(p.s. stay tuned for tomorrow because ive got a REALLY exciting giveaway coming up!)

2014 business goals + craft fair inspiration.

i know were two and a half months into 2014, so maybe its a little bit weird to be talking about business goals right now.

but really, january comes right after SO many birthdays and holidays, so i needed a few weeks to decompress before digging back into this book:

which, to be completely honest, i havent really been using as a planner. but really thats because every time i think i get into a semi-structured workflow with the shop and blog, something comes along and throws it WAY off and im back to square one (as far as day-to-day operations are concerned).

HOWEVER the productivity/goal setting prompts in the beginning of the book? those have been a lifesaver as ive been working on building this little business of mine while also doing way too many other things at the same time (though, thankfully its starting to look like a few of those other things can go away now).

my favorite part of this book though is at the very beginning. the first prompt is to list your top 25 all-time goals, and the second is to refine that big list down to your top five priorities for just this year. since my first list was really all over the place (get a fashion degree! open a brick and mortar store! sell sewing patterns! get featured on a beautiful mess or something equally as huge!), figuring out the second list was very, very difficult.

but i eventually got there. and in the interest of staying transparent in my growth as a business owner (and the interest of i havent talked about the shop in a long time and i wanted to make sure you didnt think id given up on it), i thought id share my top 5 business goals for 2014:

1. reach 1000+ bloglovin followers. even though this blog isnt strictly business related, it is my biggest platform for talking about my shop and reaching out to potential customers, so id like to continue steadily growing my following.

2. reach/maintain 1000+ daily page views. in a similar vein, in addition to increasing my followers i also need to work on increasing my traffic, because in my year of blogging ive learned that though followers and page views seem similar, they are actually two completely different things.

3. get/maintain 100+ listings in the shop. ive been doing a lot of research on running an etsy business (because thats what i do, i research things), and one of the big tips that ive seen in a LOT of different places is that in order for people to really get into your shop, you need to have options. and not just a few options, pages of options. so this year my main focus is to get my inventory to that point, and keep it there.

4. bring in at least $1000 of combined blog/shop income. basically this means actually keeping income/expense reports like i never did with my first etsy shop. now, i say income here rather than profit because i know its unrealistic to expect things to just take off right away and pay all our bills. but we have to start somewhere. so if i can just bring in $1000 while still sticking to my business plan and not losing any money, ill be stoked.

5. save up for/assemble a great craft fair setup and do at least one craft fair. this is the big one. i LOVE doing craft fairs, but since the past few years have involved a lot of moving and downsizing (and not to mention a pretty significant rebrand), im not exactly equipped to start doing events. i do have a table, and tablecloths, and hangers, and some small display pieces, but i still need a tent, rack, folding chairs, and some appropriate signage (plus maybe some better display pieces).

since i just made custom bow ties for my friends wedding, i actually do have a bit of capital to invest back into the business, so of course ive been scouring pinterest for cute craft fair booths. here are a few of my favorites:

this display made from boxes is PERFECT for housing all different sized items (which i totally have):

source
this ladder shelf looks really practical and simple to make (though finding a ladder that fits in my hatchback may be an issue):

source
i LOVE these pennants hanging across the front of the table as opposed to a typical sign:

source
and while this isnt exactly the presentation id like for my hair bows, i think i could improve the concept into something a bit more, you know, me:

source
so, thats what ive been thinking about business wise, in case you were wondering.

do you do craft fairs? what are your go-to display pieces? do you have a good source for clothing racks (im serious).
